Five appects of Pelicot’s crime not given wide coverage.

60 Minutes Australia (39 minutes in this case) covers crucial stories or covers stories in interesting ways.

5 things about Pelicot’s crimes you may not have realized:

  1. It was the actions of a woman security officer at a supermarket convincing a woman Pelicot upskirted to talk to the police that led them to examine Pelicot’s phone and his computer.
  2. Pelicot kept the rapes going whilst under investigation for the upskirting.
  3. It was clear the men Pelicot recruited knew it was rape because he told them they had to wait until the medication reacted, taking Gisèle into deep enough sleep to be raped. Plus, the footage made it clear she was asleep. It was Gisèle who asked that the footage be shown in court.
  4. Confiding in her ‘loving’ husband, Gisèle admitted racism, saying she did not like black or Arab men – guess who Pelicot recruited to rape her.
  5. Police are currently investigating Pelicot for attacks against women from decades earlier, as his DNA was discovered at the scene of an attempted rape of a young estate agent in an apartment in 1999. The police couldn’t identify whose DNA it was until Pelicot’s DNA was entered into their criminal records system. Due to Frances’s statute of limitations, he can’t be tried for that case. However, there were murders with the same attack MO, but without the police getting a lucky break, Pelicot is unlikely to face a trial for any of those crimes. At least he faces the rest of his life in prison.

It’s chilling that Pelicot’s crimes against his wife could be like an iceberg, only what you can see and prove now, with potentially much more underneath. Doubtless, there are men in every country doing exactly what Pelicot did; if you see any red flags, please get them checked. I want to shake the hand of Gisèle and the woman security officer at that French supermarket.
