What is empathy?

In short according to Clara McLaren empathy is:

  1. Emotional contagion – the ability to feel other people’s feelings.
  2. Empathic accuracy – the ability to identify what another person is feeling.
  3. Emotional regulation – mature enough relationship with your own feelings that you can be in the presence of other people’s strong feelings.
  4. Perspective-taking is the cognitive part of empathy, where you can take other people’s perspectives and understand their beliefs, preferences, plans, goals, and intentions.
  5. Empathic concern – caring for others. (Displayed by toddlers when they see another crying.)
  6. Perspective engagement – being able to take effective, compassionate action after you have understood a person’s emotion.
