The Duty To Warn
I also want to highlight the very least you should do as a bystander to inappropriate behaviour, the duty to warn.
“I had one warning because actually being warned is very important because it arms you, and all she said to me was, ‘Always sit in an armchair, don’t ever sit on the sofa next to him, and always keep your puffa jacket on.’ No more than that, but actually it’s an incredibly important one. A good piece of advice because it meant that I was ready, actually, when he did start behaving badly. It also meant that I wasn’t as frightened because I knew that it had happened to other people.”
It wasn’t sexual harassment, but when I was location managing, I was warned about a director who took any indecision as a sign of incompetence: “You have to be able to ‘Give a good account of yourself.'”
This director became very frustrated during the camera recce when a location owner was late to return home to let us in.
“I can’t produce them out of thin air. I suggest you get a cup of tea and sit on the minibus. I’m sure they will be here shortly.” It worked; he never again tried giving me any gip. It shouldn’t be the case, but some people have to be given guardrails in how they treat you.
Again, publicising a means whereby you will always be ready for bad behaviour: https://tinyurl.com/2bbtavjb
