Lives lost because families are not consulted.

Christopher Lascaris died because no one checked on his capacity to make decisions and save him from cuckooing.

Criminals actively search for independently living vulnerable adults to cuckoo – take over their premises for criminal purposes, for example, to grow cannabis.

It’s not just in cases of mental capacity that families need to be consulted. It could also have saved the lives of Ian Coates, Grace O’Malley Kumar, and Baranaby Webber if Valdo Calocane’s family had been listened to when they raised concerns about his care and treatment with the NHS.

If there is a genuine dispute between a child and their family, that would need to be considered. However, that didn’t apply in the case of Christopher Lascaris, and the Calocanes were the most at risk of his violence, so, of course, they should have been consulted. So, two amendments to the law are required: one for mental capacity and one for mental health.

There should be lifelong supervision orders, whereby vulnerable adults are checked in on regularly by the authorities to ensure they are okay. These deaths happen because we, as a ‘civilized’ society, don’t care enough. What happens to vulnerable adults after the death of their parents? These are the easiest adults to bully, and criminals know this.
