Why aren’t police and coroners more curious?

Jools Sweeney died, and all his mother wants to know is why

I can’t understand why the police and coroner didn’t want to find out why Jools died. It could have been one of the silly challenges on social media; surely, police would have wanted to stop that from happening to another child. Or do they only investigate that possibility if it happens to more than one child? Again, a question of funding – Tory rundown services didn’t have the extra capacity? But coroners can order social media companies to provide access to the child’s social media account – why didn’t they?

It could have been a challenge gone wrong, that challenge could have been part of a campaign by a gang, it could have been anything; it’s not difficult to imagine what goes through his mother’s mind 24/7 . Police and coroners are supposed to be curious by profession.

The good news is that the online safety bill makes social media companies keep the data. We need to mandate a mother’s right to know; a dead child doesn’t have data protection rights.
