These cases look bad, and those investigating think they are worse than the outcomes given. No police officer under investigation should be allowed to resign. Sure, they could go, but there should still be an outcome, which could include the loss of wages and pension contributions since the date of the event being investigated and for the time an officer has been suspended.
Yes, being a police officer is a challenging job; the salary, benefits, and pension should be excellent, but so too should the service expected of officers. They should be from our best, and these certainly aren’t.
The reflective chat was a waste of time. The officer concerned was not even taken through the footage or asked how they would feel if their wife had a mental health crisis and was treated like this. Unless this bit was cut out?
The suicidal woman certainly didn’t feel any better by being arrested and pepper sprayed and searched by male officers. What is worse is that no officer involved in the arrest of that woman said – “I don’t think we should treat her like this.” They said nothing; there wasn’t a single empathic thing said to her – does this accurately reflect that police officers don’t understand that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect? There is a deeply disappointing callousness in their behavior. Even the local Police Federation Chair thinks it’s gross misconduct. It is very brave of the Chief Constable Sarah Crew of my home county, Avon & Somerset Police, to let the cameras in.
