The trailer for the whole series
Episode nine single mum Justina Rucinski, a young baker working from home, was raped by a man supposedly picking up an order. A friend commented that Justina liked to see “the good in everyone.”
There is undoubtedly something Bambi about her, actually more Thumper.
When she was struggling financially, an apparently large order came in. The man seemed so nice and was acting “super helpful” up until he was in her house putting a gun to her head.
What I found beautiful in this tale of horror was Justina’s refusal to be identified by it. There is no shame in her reaction. Pain, yes; anger, sure, but no shame. For my generation of women, we were only just moving on from a fate worse than death – who came up with that!? Unsurprisingly, a couple of men. Something is compelling about how this woman responded to what happened to her.
She found the man, helped get him convicted, and sentenced to 25 years. “He messed with the wrong woman.”
I know every woman responds differently, and I’m not criticizing the way other women deal with being raped; the only one who did anything wrong is the rapist. I just like this other option being out there, “I chose life when I was calm with that man.”
There were red flags – she had been receiving anonymously sent messages and flowers, and the order that came in was unusually large – from a new customer – but he put her at ease and was ‘Super Helpful.’ She was happy after struggling financially; she thought her business could now take off. “You wouldn’t have seen him coming.” This is precisely when you need to be on your guard – if it seems too good to be true – invariably it is. This episode is one to pass on to young women. It is possible to be hopeful and careful.
