Banter can only be acceptable if it is consensual.
To give a more complex example, I was working as an assistant story editor. My story editor was openly gay, and I have M.S., as we got on really well, he started calling me a criple and I called him queer. This was 25 years ago. However, one of the P.A.s overheard us and said, “You can’t say that, what if I have a disability or if my son were gay?” So our consensual banter, overheard by a third party who had not given consent, was now offensive, so we stopped.
