Arrogant: oblivious of reality pic Artis777
Yes, I’ve been there. I remember back in the 90s looking at a wheelchair user and thinking that would never happen to me. Then, when diagnosed with M.S., thinking, Oh, Yes, It Could! The more arrogant a person is, the more myopic their foresight and self-awareness become. A friend recently offloaded a partner who was, at best, useless and arrogant with it. It never occurred to him that she would rid herself of him. I have to say I was impressed when she did! His lack of self-awareness was breathtaking and landed him in a King Lear-sized hole. Will he learn from it? I hope so, or the rest of his life will be very lonely.
The greater the arrogance, the bigger the mistakes. Think Duke of York or Archbishop of York, for that matter. The church of England still does not understand just what child abuse does to the child. Not until an Archbishop of Canterbury is gladly willing, preferably on their knees, to beg forgiveness on behalf of the church from those abused will it be credible that the Church of England understands.
If you are ever tempted to think of yourself as more entitled, more important, indispensable, enjoying power over people, think Gregg Wallace, Russell Brand, Giovanni Pernice, Jermaine Jenas, and have a word with yourself. At 26, I sat on a pyramid in Egypt and thought what happens to you will prove no more important than a grain of sand here. It was a lovely, comforting, and very collective thought that I didn’t really find again until 2003, when I became a union rep. The best personal development in my career since I joined the BBC.
Arrogance is but a symptom of stupidity.
